The European smartphone market is suffering from Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. According to Canalys, significantly fewer mobile phones were sold in the last quarter. Year-on-year, sales have shrunk by around ten percent to 41.7 million devices. According to market researchers, the majority of the decline is due to the slump in sales in Ukraine and Russia, analyst Runar Bjørhovde stressed.
According to Canalys figures, sales in Ukraine fell by 51 percent in the first quarter and by 31 percent in Russia. These values still include sales before the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022. While the smartphone business in Ukraine is disrupted by the war, the two global market leaders Samsung and Apple withdrew from Russia.
Smartphone sales also fell in other European countries. According to Canalys, 3.5 percent fewer mobile phones were sold, partly because the war in Ukraine boosted inflation. Samsung remained the number one in Europe with a market share of 35 percent and 14.6 million smartphones sold; however, the Koreans recorded a decline of 9 percent. Apple was able to expand its market share with 8.9 million iPhones from 19 percent a year earlier to 21 percent. The Chinese supplier Xiaomi was just behind with a market share of 20 percent – after 23 percent in the same quarter of the previous year.
