Toshiba has announced a new hard drive for desktop PCs. The P300 has a storage capacity of 2 TB and has a 6 Gbps SATA interface as well as a 256 MB buffer with a transfer rate of up to 210 MiB/s.
With the Toshiba P300 Desktop PC Hard Drive, the storage specialist has introduced a 2 TB hard drive for desktop PCs. The 3.5-inch high-spin hard drive with 7,200 revolutions per minute was developed for desktop, gaming and storage applications where performance, capacity and reliability are important, according to Toshiba. The SMR technology (Shingled Magnetic Recording) is intended to provide capacity. The overlapping writing of the tracks results in a higher data density, so that only the required magnetic surface is required for correct reading. According to the manufacturer, the SMR approach achieves higher capacities on the same magnetic area as a CMR drive, resulting in a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). According to Toshiba, the cache architecture of the P300 alleviates the problem of lower performance in random rewriting, which usually occurs with SMR disk.
The P300 is connected via a 6 Gbit/s SATA interface. The hard disk also has a 256 MB buffer, with which the hard disk should achieve a sustained transfer rate of up to 210 MiB / s. Therefore, the drive is particularly suitable for web applications, gaming or data archiving. The Toshiba P300 Desktop PC Hard Drive will be available from the 3rd quarter of 2022.
