According to Lenovo, the Thinkpad P16 is a synthesis of the previous Thinkpad P15 and P17 mobile workstations. It has inherited the compact design from the P15 and the equipment with high-end components from the larger P17. And here the new Thinkpad P16, weighing almost three kilograms, can even top the previous P17. Intel’s brand new Alder Lake HX CPUs up to the Core i9-12950HX with vPro support are used for the processor. They come up with up to 16 cores, including a maximum of eight fast P-cores and eight efficient E-cores. The DDR5 RAM is up to 128 GB. On request, professional Nvidia solutions up to the mobile RTX A5500 with 7,424 Cuda cores, 58 RT cores, 232 tensor cores and 16 GB ECC GDDR6 provide fast workstation graphics. The CPU and GPU are cooled by a double vapor chamber and two fans. The storm-gray housing is made of aluminum and accommodates a 94 Wh battery. According to the manufacturer, the battery frame and the housing of the two speakers are partly made of recycled plastic.

With the Thinkpad P16, Lenovo is merging the previous P15 and P17 mobile workstation lines into one device.

Up to two PCIe Gen4 SSDs with a maximum capacity of 8 GB are installed as mass storage. The communication is provided by a Wi-Fi6 or a Wi-FI6E module, the latter only in conjunction with Windows 11, as well as an optional LTE module. The interfaces include two Thunderbolt 4 ports, another USB-C port, two USB Type-A sockets, an SD card reader and an HDMI output. On request, the notebook is also available with a smart card reader.

16:10-Display with OLED option

For the 16-inch display with 16:10 aspect ratio, the manufacturer offers various options: anti-reflective IPS panels with 1,920 x 1,200, 2,560 x 1,600 or 3,840 x 2,400 pixels, the latter with 600 nits, or an OLED touch screen with also 3,840 x 2,400 pixels and DisplayHDR 500 TrueBlack. All displays are pre-calibrated from the factory. Above the display sits a Full HD webcam with sliding cover and optional IR sensor for Windows Hello. As a further option for a biometric login, a fingerprint reader can be ordered above the numeric keypad of the keyboard, in which a trackpoint is again located as an additional input device next to the touchpad. The operating system available is Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 Home or Ubuntu Linux. In addition, Windows 10 Pro is supported via downgrade, Red Hat Linux or Fedora Linux.

The Lenovo Thinkpad P16 should be available in August. Its price starts at 1,979 euros.

With up to 16 cores (8 P-cores and 8 E-cores), a maximum of 128 GB DDR5 memory and PCIe Gen5, the Alder Lake HX processors are offshoots of the Alder Lake desktop CPUs with 55 watts base power.
